Port Antonio travel guide

Port Antonio on the Northeast coast of Jamaica is probably one of the finest destinations on the island for visitors who want to get a mix of what Jamaica has to offer.
Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, Puerto Anton, as it was known then was little more than a fishing village. Then with the arrival of a Mr Baker in 1871 the future of Port Antonio changed forever. Mr Baker was one of the founders of the United Fruit Company and with the export of Bananas to the U.S he helped turn Port Antonio into the Banana capital of the world.
Port Antonio has long been a favourite spot for celebrities and wealthy U.S citizens especially since Errol Flynn retired to the area. Although the area does play host to some of the most spectacular homes and resorts in Jamaica the town itself does still remain very traditional and is a great environment in which to experience the people of Jamaica.
Port Antonio is probably most famous for the Blue Lagoon, the location of the Brooke Shields film. The lagoon with its deep turquoise colours is truly a sight that must be seen to be believed. Reach falls, the location of a scene in the Tom Cruise film Cocktail is another favourite spot.
Port Antonio offers some of the most beautiful beaches on the island such as Frenchmans cove and some of the best surfing around like that at Boston beach.
